Children’s Garden Festival: The Hungry Caterpillar opening in June

Join us in the Gardens as we take a journey through a caterpillar’s transformation into a beautiful butterfly. The Children’s Garden will transform into a colorful and magical place inspired by Eric Carle’s classic book The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Enjoy crafts, activities and imaginative displays that will capture the essence of one of the most beloved children’s stories. Cost is FREE for Gardens members, $6 nonmembers and FREE  for children 2 & under. Family memberships cost $65. This event serves as to enhance the membership program. The Myriad Gardens Foundation is a non-profit 501c(3) organization that supports Myriad Botanical Gardens. Funds raised through memberships help with operating costs. The Children’s Garden Festival is sponsored by Devon Energy, Tinker Federal Credit Union, E.L. and Thelma Gaylord Foundation, Jean and David McLaughlin.

IMPORTANT: The Children’s Garden and the Thunder Fountain will be closed May 30-June 2 for festival set-up then will reopen June 3-11 with admission then back to regular hours and free to the public starting June 14.

Painting in the Gardens continues… Celebrating Children’s Garden Festival! Join Wine and Palette at the Gardens to create! On this day we’ll paint “Grace in Flight” on a 11” x 14” canvas.  A portion of all sales are donated to the gardens. Discount coupons not valid. No Food or Beverage service available. Guests welcome to bring own.

Join us Saturdays during The Very Hungry Caterpillar for an interactive reading of some of Eric Carle’s most beloved colorful nature stories. Audience members will have the chance to participate in the story and be the caterpillar, brown bear and other creatures through these charming stories.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar is not the only caterpillar that’s hungry. Did you know caterpillars can eat three times their weight in food every day? In this class, we’ll learn all about the fascinating caterpillar with fun facts, interactive readings, a craft and a game to wrap it all up.

Bring your child’s slightly used books and exchange them with other families or donate them to the Gardens’ Little FREE library. It will be a day to celebrate reading at the Gardens. The first three guests to bring a book will be able to take their pick of the following three children’s books by Ree Drummond–Charlie the Ranch Dog, Charlie Plays Ball or Little Ree straight from the Pioneer Mercantile in Pawkhuska, OK. We will also have local authors from Oklahoma leading story times and other book-related activities. Come celebrate the joy of reading with us. All ages welcome.

  • 12-1pm Desiree Webber author of Buffalo Train Ride, a Centennial Title, and Oklahoma Book Award Finalist will lead story time.
  • 12-4pm Downtown Oklahoma City Library Pop-Up Library
  • 1-2pm Sherri Biggs, media specialist and elementary school teacher, will lead an interactive children’s book craft.
  • 2-3pm Maureen Heffernan, director of the Myriad Botanical Gardens and author of Fairy Houses of the Maine Coast will lead story time.
